Proposing the Project
Vincent Polimeni is the visionary force behind the proposal to create a tunnel beneath the Long Island Sound. A Long Islander who knows full well that thoughtful, strategic thinking is the only means by which our region can protect its future, he has placed his own financial resources into the comprehensive engineering, environmental and community affairs studies required to spark a serious discussion surrounding the merits of this multibillion-dollar undertaking.
He is joined by his son, Michael Polimeni, vice president of acquisitions for Polimeni International and an emerging veteran of the challenging commercial real estate market here and abroad. Michael Polimeni has assumed the responsibilities of chief of staff for the Cross Sound Link Tunnel, coordinating engineering, communication, government affairs and environmental strategies with the project’s team of consultants.
As founder, president and CEO of Polimeni International, Vincent Polimeni has led a team of professionals here and in Europe developing retail and commercial projects that adhere to his own philosophy of innovative economic growth. In the Northeast, he has created premiere developments that have defined excellence in design and function, including the Islandia Center on Long Island, the Toll Gate Plaza in Bel Air, MD, and a shopping complex in Cape May Courthouse, NJ, among others. His European efforts include successful developments throughout Poland and Eastern Europe.
Together, the Polimenis bring to this proposal extensive and practical appreciation of the challenges of any public works project in the region. Vincent is a co-founder of the Association for a Better Long Island (ABLI) that, through the course of its 20-year history, has advocated orderly economic growth that enhances the region’s environment. Michael represents the next generation of members, who seek to sustain and expand the organization’s mission.
By proposing the Sound Link Tunnel, Vincent and Michael Polimeni, residents of Long Island, observed, “The future is coming at us whether we are prepared or indifferent. The true question is whether we are capable of directing our future or merely willing to respond to events imposed upon us. We believe the Cross Sound Link gives us the means to enhance our lives by directing how, where and why transportation technology can be used in getting us from here to there.”
